Helping Survivors of Hurricane Harvey

3 Things You Can Do Today

It’s hard not to turn on a TV or open a paper without seeing stories about the devastation in southest Texas from Hurricane Harvey. While the news tends to focus on the immediate devastation, the evacuation and that getting out of the area is the number one concern, many of us in North Texas wonder how we can help.  How can we help our neighbors in need that, not only need assistance during the storm and immediate aftermath, but, potentially for weeks to come as they work to restore their lives?

You can take immediate action as the simplest of items are in immediate demand.  Here are three easy steps that can take less than 90 minutes and can make a tremendous difference to those who are affected:

  1.  Go to the store, grab a shopping cart and fill it with the basic needs – see below
  2. Log onto the web to find a collection center near you
  3. Drop your items off where trucks are regularly heading south to quickly get these much needed items in the hands of those who are desperate for assistance.

These are the items most in need:

  • New underwear and socks (all sizes)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Toiletries
  • Feminine Hygiene products
  • Baby diapers, wipes and formula

Even better, set a collection point in your office and have one trip organized to take supplies to a drop point.  This could be the best way you’ll ever spend your lunch hour.

For a list of drop off points, log onto www.trustedworld.org.  You can also go to the Dallas Morning Newswebsite  to find other places to volunteer or offer financial support.

TODAY is the day you can do something that means the world to someone in need. The simplest actions can make a tremendous difference.
